Handling: Easy to handle, enjoys affection
|
Outdoor Tolerance: Temp tolerance is 20-80F, Moisture will ruin their fur. Best kept indoors at 65-72F
|
Lifespan: 8-10 years
|
Housing: They need at least 30x30in of cage space with a exercise pen that is at least 2ftx6ft+ long. They need enough to live in comfortably. Flooring is important to consider. A wire bottom cage with mats will be the most sanitary, but if litter trained, any floor should be fine. Rabbits with poor genetics may be prone to soar hocks on wire. Poor husbandry on a solid floor may cause soar hocks or urine scald. Avoid bedding that is dusty such as pine. Do not use clumping litter as it may cause sever issue and build up on feet and can even clog their gentiles. Do not use anything the rabbit may ingest. Clean water should be supplied at all times.
Feed: 1/4 cup pellets per day. I feed Manna Pro Sho, but there are many other great diets. Avoid foods with fruit and/or colorful pieces. Rabbits should only be eating timothy pellets. Regular consumption of fruit, grain and other fillers will cause them to get obese and can cause other health issues.
Timothy Hay or orchard crass should be available at all times. If rabbit stops eating or drinking, seek veterinary help immediately as this can be life threatening.
Chews: Rabbits chew constantly to wear down their teeth. Make sure they have safe chewable objects such as apple sticks, whicker balls, ext. Before giving your bunny anything, research to make sure its safe.
Grooming: Mini rex are low maintenance. Use a rubber glove to pull loose hairs. Clean out ears weekly. Nails should be clipped weekly. Check teeth and ensure they are not over grown. If too long, they can be clipped with nail clippers. Make sure eyes are clean and clear. If shedding hair clumps on the eye, soak it with a warm wash cloth and coax it out. Ensure nose and eyes are not runny. If there is discharge seek veterinary assistance immediately. Check underside of tail. If wet, or has diarrhea seek veterinary help immediately as this can be life threatening.
Cleaning: Spot clean their living area or litter box daily and do a full cage clean every week. Do not use harsh chemicals. Research pet safe cage sprays or simply use a vinegar/water solution.

How to train your rabbit to use the litter box?
Step 1: Keep rabbit in a confined space until litter trained. Get a large cat pan, do not waste money on the corner pans. Most rabbits will not use them. Step 2: Fill litter box with hay. Place food and water in litter box. Unlike other animals, rabbit go where they eat. They also poop while they eat! It is important the food and water is IN the litter pan. Step 3: Pick up all loose poops and place in litter box. Dab up urine outside of box with paper towel and throw in the box. Clean area outside of box well as to not encourage urination outside the pan. Step 4: When cleaning pan, always save some droppings and urine. They get confused easily. Once you get them going in the box, do not move the box to a new location. If they insist on one corner, move the box to that corner. Is your rabbit still spraying? This could be a sign of territorial marking or sexual frustration. Desexing can prevent this in pets. |
Is your rabbits pee orange?
This is normal. This color usually comes from the calcium in their food. |
Exercise: They should get at least 6 hours a day to streach their legs.
'Keeping MR together?
MR are very temperamental and territorial when it comes to other rabbits. Despite what many pet rabbit sites say, it is incredibly dangerous to keep two intact rabbits together. Same sex aggression is common and rabbits of breeding age will often kill or at the very least, severely injure each other. Even if one rabbit is altered, and the other is not, once the unaltered rabbit is breeding age, they will often start fighting with it's fixed 'friend'. Unaltered rabbits of opposite sex should never be paired together (or even housed next to each other) unless you are planning on babies. If you absolutely must have two, both rabbits should be siblings or similar age and altered before 5 months old. You will often see fights start to break out around 12 weeks old. Each rabbit needs 10 sqft of space with plenty of hides. Never introduce two intact adults.
It is not recommended show rabbits interact with other rabbits. It only takes one fight to ruin your show animal.
